A miner carries a load of sulphur

A miner carries a load of sulphur out of Kawah Ijen volcanic crater in East Java June 2, 2008. Kawah Ijen's sulphur miners trek over 8 km (5 miles) from the crater to a collection centre with loads weighing between 50 to 100 kg (110 - 220 pounds) on their shoulders to earn the equivalent of $7 a day. Around 10 tonnes of sulphur are extracted daily from the volcanic crater and are then used in sugar refineries, cosmetics, medicines and explosives.
